Microsoft released Hyper-V bare metal hypervisor platform for Server 2008. Hyper-V is just plain less expensive to implement than VMWare ESX Server.
Microsoft Says " The update to the Hyper-V role provides improvements to security, stability, performance, user experience, forward compatibility of configurations, and the programming model."
